Structural Male Infertility Causes
Structural male infertility occurs when there is a blockage in the tube from the testes to the urethra. Another form of structural infertility in men is when there is a varicocele i.e. swelling of veins around the testes. This increased volume of blood flow generates excessive heat which kills off the sperm. The treatment often involves risky surgery. Fortunately, these are uncommon male infertility causes.
Functional Male Infertility Causes
Functional male infertility causes can be attributed to
- Genetic causes and are common in men with few or no sperms
- Hormone disorders
- Low sperm count
- Poor motility
- No sperm
- Low semen production
In functional male infertility causes, the sperm either lack the complete gene to fertilize the egg or is not able to survive the passage through the cervix to fertilize the eggs e.g. because of a lack of conducive environment due to low semen production.
The most common causes of male infertility is low sperm count and poor sperm motility.
So, what are the options for male infertility treatment?
Fertility drugs such androgens (mesterolone), FSH injections, kallikrein, testolactone, clomiphene, steroids, and antioxidants (vitamins E and C) are being used to improve sperm production. However, none of these had been found to be significantly beneficial in male infertility treatment.
The most successful male infertility treatment in such instances had in fact been seen in Traditional Chinese Medicine in combination with dietary and lifestyle changes, including the consumption of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, and quitting any form of substance abuse.
Traditional Chinese Medicine had proven to be very effective in treating unknown causes of male infertility. The principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine in infertility treatment works on conditioning the body for fertility, so the positive effect of the treatment will be apparent only after about 3 months, which is the time it takes for a sperm to mature. Nevertheless, the overall improvement to one’s well being can be felt only after a couple of session using Traditional Chinese Medicine.
In cases where the above male infertility treatments are unsuccessful, artificial insemination or donor insemination may be suggested. These will involve IUI treatment or IVF treatment.
IUI treatment is the process where the sperm is specially collected and prepared so that higher concentrations of the most motile sperms are selected and injected through the cervix around the time of ovulation. IUI can be combined with the use of certain drugs to stimulate the ovaries to make larger numbers of eggs, which further improves the chances of pregnancy. This is a commonly used infertility treatment in cases where low sperm count or quality is the main cause of male infertility.
IVF treatment is used only if IUI has failed or if there is also female infertility issues. In some cases ICSI is done as part of the IVF treatment. ICSI involves injecting a single sperm into an egg. Even if sperm does not appear during ejaculation, doctors may be able to take sperm directly from the testicles, or from the bladder (in cases of retrograde ejaculation), and use that sperm to fertilize an egg in the lab.
However, IVF is a very expensive treatment and involve a certain amount of risk to the woman, so some couples may opt to use donor sperm for IUI.
