High risk pregnancy could occur in women of young or old maternal age, are obese or malnourished, with preexisting health condition like diabetes or HIV. But high-risk pregnancy can also happen to women who were healthy before. Some common causes of high risk pregnancy are gestational diabetes which only happens to pregnant women, preeclampsia and eclampsia which affects the kidneys, liver, and brain, preterm labor which happens before the 37th week of pregnancy, and HIV which progressively destroys the ability of our bodies to fight infections and other types of cancer.
But the good news about this is that the causes which exposes women to high risk pregnancy can be treated. For one, regular prenatal care can help both the mother and the baby lessen the risk or prevent serious problems to develop during pregnancy.
Another way to lessen the occurrence of high risk pregnancy is for a woman to take at least 400 micrograms of folic acid everyday before and during pregnancy. Folic acid is known to prevent spina bfida in your baby. Together with vitamin B12, taking folic acid ensures that the right amount of DNA and RNA that your baby need are produce. Folic acid ensures that the genetic code of the baby inside your womb is intact.
Other things that could help lessen high risk pregnancy is to get the proper immunizations before pregnancy, although there are some types of immunizations that are given during pregnancy. Immunizations against measles, mumps, chicken pox, or rubella should be given at least one month before becoming pregnant.
During pregnancy, maintaining a healthy weight and diet is also needed. It is a no-brainer that women should stay away from smoking, alcohol, and drugs during pregnancy as it could make the risk greater. One shouldn’t forget also that getting regular physical activity isn’t advised against pregnant women but rather encouraged. Exercise helps lessen high blood pressure and diabetes. However, there some precautions to be heeded. Before starting any exercise program, consult your physician first for a check-up if there is any health condition you have that requires you to limit physical activity. Take extra care that any activity you take wouldn’t cause any injury that would put you and your baby to risk.
